NFL ‘Free Speech’ May Put Pro Football out of Business

Three sports with large numbers of black players may all go out of business.

Look at these notes from The Daily Caller about the National Football League on Sunday, September 24:

The entire Pittsburgh Steelers team remained in the locker room during the National Anthem, with the exception of one player: Army veteran Alejandro Villanueva, who plays offensive tackle for the Steelers.

… A large number of Jacksonville Jaguars and Baltimore Ravens players knelt during the National Anthem during their game in London on Sunday, but remained standing during God Save The Queen.

Associated Press reports about the same day:

NFL players used the National Anthem to show their defiance to President Donald Trump’s criticism, with at least 100 players kneeling or sitting in protest…

Most teams in the early afternoon games locked arms in solidarity. At least three team owners joined their players.

Wow. Three owners joined in. Amazing. reports about Sunday Night Football for September 24:

In metered market numbers, the primetime matchup that saw the Washington Redskins beat the Oakland Raiders 27-10 snared an 11.6/20, the worst SNF has performed this season so far. It’s an 8% dip from the early numbers of last week’s game, Atlanta’s 34-23 win over Green Bay. Amid cheers and boos from fans at FedEx Field in Maryland last night, the third week of the SNF season declined 10% from early numbers of the comparable game of last year on September 25, 2016.

Wow. Even before these recent incidents the National Football League was seeing game attendance and TV viewership sinking rapidly from a bad reaction to Colin Kaepernick refusing to stand for the National Anthem in Autumn 2016. He did this ostensibly to protest the fact that blacks have continued to fail in America.

Unfortunately he did it in a venue where black football players have become fabulously wealthy playing their silly game. The irony of this is not lost on the American people. In other words the players might think about taking their activism off of the field.

Americans watch sports for fun and to escape from politics, their jobs and the everyday humdrum of life. If the NFL and other sports continue to become politicized, then it will not be an escape any longer.

There also has been a massive drop in ratings at the sports network ESPN after it has become a largely black network with radical political views. Many layoffs ensued. In other words the blacks took over and put themselves out of a job.

Now President Trump responded about an offending player by saying, “Get that son of a bitch off the field right now! He is fired. He’s fired!” Trump even urged fans to boycott the games. Wow. Kaboom.

The head of the National Football League players’ union said that the union “will never back down” from supporting its players’ right to protest.

And neither will rational Americans. We revere our free speech rights. We know that every American has a right to express himself or herself, but we also know that the speaker is not insulated from the consequences of his/her actions, and that the consequences for football may be dire.

The 1st Amendment to the Constitution says that government may not take action against free speech, i.e., make a law that gets you thrown in jail for saying the wrong thing. But “free speech” does not apply in the workplace. Your boss cannot have you thrown in jail either for saying the wrong thing, but he sure can fire you for saying something that he dislikes. Liberals are trying to conflate the two issues to create chaos and confusion and to score political points.

If this behavior spreads to baseball and basketball – and believes that it will – it could kill these sports too. After all teams will quickly be hit with financial losses if they lose significant numbers of customers. Marginal teams will be the first to go if fans continue to boycott.

Most football fans are somewhat or very conservative and patriotic. They are not going to put up with this stuff. And if you think that the black players will back down, then you have not been paying attention. They will ramp up their protests since their target is now president Trump as well as their usual bogeyman of racial discrimination.

US labor unions did the same thing even when faced with the shutdown of their companies. This is how millions of manufacturing jobs were destroyed in the 1960s and 1970s, including in’s hometown. The unions did not back down. They doubled down and accelerated their demands and their bad behavior.

People get fired for this type of behavior every day. This is precisely what happens in private businesses all across America when an employee acts outside the bounds of what is expected. In other words the employee may do what he wishes on his own time, but not on the company’s time.

Football player contracts, and other sports contracts, have clauses in them that allow team owners to terminate a player who acts in ways that are detrimental to the team or its image. An owner certainly may order his players to stand for the National Anthem or be fired. And so the proverbial ball is in the owners’ courts. If they join in these protests in big numbers then the National Football League is over. Done. Finished. Just like ESPN has crashed and burned after being considered invincible for years.

And Americans won’t care. They will find other things to do on Sunday and on Monday night. And once they do so, they will never go back to football.

These protests come on top of repeated allegations of criminal behavior by many players including the abuse of women, which pretty much went under the radar until now. Who could forget the black player Ray Rice who was seen on a security video dragging his unconscious girlfriend by the hair out of an elevator back in 2014.

USA Today reports that NFL players have been arrested 869 times since the year 2000. This now is going to blow up too, doing more damage to the NFL. If this National Anthem issue had not come up, the crime would have remained in the background. It no longer will.

Now many players are outraged at the president over his “son of a bitch” statement, as are many political commentators. But president Trump did not start this controversy. It was started by a player. President Trump even disinvited the Golden State Warriors championship basketball team from a White House visit after one black player would not commit to the visit.

Good for president Trump. Obama had every winning team come to the White House and Obama left our nation in tatters. There is no connection between teams visiting the White House and good things for our country. These team visits are just a show and Trump should end the practice. It is totally unnecessary. Trump needs to fix the country.

Just imagine that this disrespect of the National Anthem keeps growing. Tens of millions more people who watch football every Sunday will start thinking, “Why am I wasting my time on this?! I don’t want to see this! I want to see the game!”

After all, these sports are not that exciting to watch in the first place and even spectators and commentators within these sports have been saying that the games are too long and too slow, which has been saying since I was a kid. I have never watched any of these sports except for World Series or Super Bowl games with the Boston team.

Now more and more Americans are going to turn off these games and find something else to do. Once it starts it will never reverse because the behavior that causes it will never reverse. It is following a national pattern of increasing radical activism.

After all, when you have watched hundreds of games, or even thousands over your lifetime, they lose their excitement. They are the same thing over and over, with some occasional excitement thrown in. I have found that I cannot watch a whole NASCAR race anymore when I used to watch three or four races a year. It does not hold my interest for three hours even though NASCAR is conservative and has not gotten political in any way.

NASCAR legend Richard Petty even warned drivers to respect the flag. Good. They will do so if they want to keep their careers.
