The recently-passed Trump tax reform bill has a really nice surprise in it. Look at this from The Washington Examiner:
Senate Republicans passed legislation early Saturday allowing oil and gas drilling in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge (ANWR) as part of a tax reform package, moving closer to fulfilling a long-time GOP goal.
The passage of the bill marked a significant achievement for Sen. Lisa Murkowski, R-Alaska, the chairwoman of the Senate Energy and Natural Resources Committee, who has introduced legislation to open a portion of the Alaskan refuge to drilling every term she has served in the chamber, only to be blocked by Democrats.
…Democrats have long been successful in blocking Republican efforts to allow energy exploration in … the “1002 area,” where billions of barrels of crude oil lie beneath the coastal plain.
This is great news and a major development. For decades Democrats and ‘greenies’ have sought to choke off our oil supplies in every way possible (by blocking drilling or pipelines, by suing oil companies, by linking oil to ‘climate change’, etc.) in order to get us dependent on solar and wind energy which produce negligible amounts of expensive energy while enriching environmentalists.
Finally we are going to see new energy flows from Northern Alaska which has massive reserves of oil and natural gas in ANWR and far beyond it.
This is also important since the Alaska pipeline has been delivering crude oil from the Prudhoe Bay oil field in Northern Alaska since 1977. The pipeline goes south 800 miles to the port of Valdez where the crude oil is poured into tanker ships for transport to refineries.
This single pipeline has at times carried 10% of America’s daily oil supply. When Prudhoe Bay was first discovered in the 1960s it was estimated to hold one billion barrels. It has since produced a whopping 18 billion barrels.
Environmentalists had vehemently opposed the pipeline and had always planned to tear it down when Prudhoe ran out. But with this plan to open the ‘1002 area’ near Prudhoe – which is estimated to hold 10 billion barrels of oil or more – the pipeline now will get a new lease on life and America will get a new supply of crucial oil.
The ‘greenies’ have implied for decades that the ‘1002 area’ is a natural jewel like a pristine forest or a mountain range full of lovely meadows. It is not. It is a flat, treeless plain near the ocean. The only vegetation is ground-hugging scrub growth. Meanwhile the total oil drilling “footprint” is only expected to be about 2,000 acres out of 1.5 million acres in the ‘1002 area’ and out of 19.6 million total acres in ANWR. This is a smart use of “our” federally-owned land.
Gasoline and heating oil reached almost $4 a gallon under Obama as part of the ‘green’ plan to intentionally make oil and natural gas scarce and expensive. President Trump is reversing this. Thank God.
At the same time the ‘green’ narrative that “the world is running out of oil” is bunk. The world has massive oil reserves already while 95% of the planet is either unexplored or under-explored.
Now here is today’s second commentary:
Wall Street Joins Phony ‘Climate’ Crusade
There is a new force among the ‘climate’ alarmists. It is the top Wall Street credit ratings company called Moody’s which has a huge amount of national clout over state and local governments by “rating” their creditworthiness and strongly affecting their ability to borrow money. Bloomberg News reports:
Coastal communities from Maine to California have been put on notice from one of the top credit rating agencies: Start preparing for climate change or risk losing access to cheap credit.
In a report to its clients Tuesday, Moody’s Investors Service Inc. explained how it incorporates climate change into its credit ratings for state and local bonds. If cities and states don’t deal with risks from surging seas or intense storms, they are at greater risk of default.
“What we want people to realize is: If you’re exposed, we know that. We’re going to ask questions about what you’re doing to mitigate that exposure,” Lenny Jones, a managing director at Moody’s, said in a phone interview. “That’s taken into your credit ratings.”
In other words Moody’s is going to judge your town based on whether it does all the things that the ‘greenies’ want like recycling and solar panels and building homes and condos where the ‘greenies’ say you can build them or doing expensive “studies” that employ high-paid ‘green’ consultants and college professors.
Moody’s is part of the left-wing Wall Street elite and can make your town look like a bad credit investment with the click of a mouse, pushing up your town’s borrowing costs significantly. So this is basically political blackmail. It should be investigated by the Trump administration.
Every town in America has a planning commission. Many towns also have “land use” commissions or “green” committees. These agencies are often run by leftists and ‘green’ fanatics who tell everyone what to do. Local newspapers chime in on the ‘green’ side. Many towns are also full of ‘greenie’ citizen/cranks who push the same agenda and buttress the ‘greenies’ in office.
These extremists pass judgment on every fence post and sidewalk that is proposed in their towns. These are brutal, controlling people. I have witnessed them personally many times. Now powerful Moody’s is joining them. Look at this nonsense from Bloomberg again:
If cities and states don’t deal with risks from surging seas or intense storms, they are at greater risk of default.
OK, notice something very subtle – they say “surging” seas and not “rising” seas because the world has seen zero evidence of “rising seas” after more than a decade of allegations that sea levels are “rising”. Al Gore warned in 2007 that sea levels were going to rise 17 feet. Instead they have risen zero.
Meanwhile, the only “surging” seas are seas that ‘surge’ onto the land during storms or hurricanes, which has been going on since the beginning of time.
In fact there is no evidence whatsoever that seas have ever risen at any time in history from melting glaciers and melting polar ice caps, which ‘greenies’ claim would have flooded coastal cities. Seas have never been reported to have risen this way despite the fact that the earth has gone through two very long and natural warm periods over the last 2,000 years:
*the Roman Warm Period of hot climate which happened in Europe during the 600 years of the Roman empire; and
*the Medieval Warm Period of 400 years of hot European climate between 900 AD to 1300 AD when even Greenland was “green” (no ice, which is why it was called Greenland). In the year 1000 Vikings settled near the Arctic Circle in Greenland, showing that even Greenland was warm.
Both warm periods are believed to have been global, when the Arctic and Antarctic ice caps are believed to have melted entirely or largely.
In short we would have a historical record of flooded coastal cities if 1,000 years of natural warming caused the seas to rise. But we do not. In other words it ain’t gonna happen today no matter what Al Gore says.
Meanwhile the alarmist ‘green’ media are reporting today that Tangier Island, a small island in the Chesapeake Bay, is threatened with extinction due to “climate change” and ‘rising seas’.
Chesapeake Bay is a large but shallow inlet of the ocean surrounded by Maryland and Virginia. Its water is brackish, or party salt and party fresh from the rivers flowing into it. The Daily Caller reported:
Al Gore was challenged on climate science Tuesday night when the mayor of Tangier Island, a community threatened by coastal erosion, told (Gore) he hadn’t seen the sea level change since he began his first career as a commercial crabber in 1970.
Gore was taking questions from the audience on a CNN town hall with Anderson Cooper when the fisherman and Tangier Island mayor James Eskridge refuted Gore’s assertion that rising sea levels were endangering coastal communities.
“I’m a commercial crabber and I’ve been working the Chesapeake Bay for 50+ years. I have a crab house business out on the water and the water level is the same as it was when the place was built in 1970,” Eskridge said. “I’m not a scientist, but I am a keen observer and if sea level rises are occurring, why am I not seeing signs of it?”
Eskridge went on to say that erosion was slowly eating away at the island, but it was a natural force caused by “wave action [and] storms.”
So who would you believe? Al Gore? Or someone who actually works in the Bay?
This is more proof that “rising seas” are fake. And what are “intense storms”? Remember that Gore predicted in 2007 that Florida was going to see mega-hurricanes every year. Yet between 2007 and 2017 there were zero hurricanes in Florida. So Gore is full of baloney. Meanwhile Gore himself in 2010 bought a beach house in California right on the ocean. So it looks like Lyin’ Al isn’t too worried about “rising seas”.
In other words this ‘climate’ nonsense is all a sham. Not even the ‘greenies’ believe it. It is just a political position for them. Bloomberg News also reports:
In its report, Moody’s lists six indicators it uses “to assess the exposure and overall susceptibility of U.S. states to the physical effects of climate change.” They include the share of economic activity that comes from coastal areas, hurricane and extreme-weather damage as a share of the economy, and the share of homes in a flood plain.
Based on those overall risks, Texas, Florida, Georgia and Mississippi are among the states most at risk from climate change. Moody’s didn’t identify which cities or municipalities were most exposed.
Oh, gee, it just so happens that the states mentioned that might suffer most from the Moody’s ratings scam also voted for Trump (Texas, Florida, Georgia and Mississippi). No mention of coastal states that voted for Hillary like California, Oregon, Massachusetts, Rhode Island, Connecticut, New York, Maryland, Delaware, New Hampshire, Virginia, Maine, Washington state or New Jersey. No surprise there. You can rest assured that Moody’s will target conservative states and towns in their ratings decisions.
When that happens we will need the Justice Department to investigate Moody’s for political bias.
And by the way, if ‘climate change’ were real and “rising seas” were threatening cities wouldn’t all of these liberal coastal cities like Boston, Los Angeles, San Francisco and New York be building walls around themselves to stop the “rising sea levels”?
Of course they would. But they are not even talking about building walls since these cities and their left-wing city councils know that this is all a political sham. Meanwhile do you know who uses the most energy of all Americans, and therefore is contributing most to these alleged environmental problems like ‘global warming’?
Environmentalists themselves are the biggest energy guzzlers of all. These ‘greenies’ love to drive 200 miles to go kayaking on a special river, fly thousands of miles to go hiking or skiing in the Rockies, flit off to South America to watch birds, or jet across the globe 10,000 miles to go mountain climbing in the Himalayas. This all requires large amounts of energy.
If you go to one of these ultra-chic ski resorts like Aspen, Colorado or Jackson Hole, Wyoming you will find that the overwhelming majority of the people there – including both wealthy visitors and the “locals” who run the ski-related businesses – are big-time ‘greenies’. The reason is simple: This is the way that most of the rich people think and if you don’t think that way in these insular communities, you will be blackballed and ridiculed.
Yet Aspen and Jackson Hole are two of the most energy-intensive towns in the US. It requires huge amounts of energy for people to get to these remote places, and then to run the ski lifts, groom the slopes, heat the condominiums and businesses, etc.
Then the same rich snobs tell us ‘regular folks’ who live modestly in a small town that we should not drive our cars five miles to work.
These ‘greenies’ are tyrannical people. They want to control all of us but to never themselves restrain their own wasteful habits or acknowledge their own hypocrisy.
