Bye-Bye Starbucks!

Starbucks, whose lavish coffee concoctions have become a staple of modern urban living, is entering uncharted waters.

When Starbucks got caught in a racial controversy recently it immediately threw in the towel of political correctness. This will cost the company dearly.

The incident happened at a Starbucks in Philadelphia where two black males were arrested after they refused to leave the store after being asked to leave. This came after they requested to use the rest room without making a purchase first.

This caused an uproar among the race hustlers like Al Sharpton and his cronies in the media and the Democrat party. But under the circumstances, being asked to leave was not unrealistic., being a law-abiding white person, would have left if asked to do so.

Private American businesses have generally been allowed to make their own rules. We have all seen the signs – ‘Rest rooms for customers only’

Thus who among us has not needed to use a bathroom and so has purchased a soda or a coffee for the right to use the bathroom at a restaurant, deli, convenience store or burger joint. It sounds fair enough, that if you want to use a facility maintained by a commercial business that you pay for it with a purchase.

There are exceptions. McDonald’s allows public bathroom use without a purchase. Meanwhile large stores like WalMart and Home Depot, which have big multi-person customer restrooms, cannot track every person who walks into their stores and uses the bathroom. But now, according to Fox News:

Starbucks announced a new policy Saturday that allows anyone to occupy the coffee shop or use the store’s (bathrooms), even if they don’t buy anything, but many are left to wonder if it’ll have a negative impact.

The “Third Place Policy” maintains that employees should consider anyone who enters Starbucks space, including restrooms, cafes and patios, a customer “regardless of whether they make a purchase,” the company said in a statement.

“We are committed to creating a culture of warmth and belonging where everyone is welcome,” Starbucks said.

Customers using the space must still follow a set of general guidelines, which requires them to use spaces as intended, be considerate of others, communicate with respect, and act responsibly, or they might be asked to leave.

‘… act responsibly, or they might be asked to leave’ is going to be problematic for Starbucks in its murkiness, and it sets a bad precedent.

But alas Starbucks is a spoke in the murky wheel of a liberal “slacker culture” that pervades America today. It is notoriously politically correct. Its shops are largely urban, and have become gathering places for some vocal elements in a do-nothing or do-little activist culture that sits at their laptops for hours (Starbucks have Wi-fi) drinking coffee and communicating on social media or posting rants against president Trump.

These are often lonely, bored, depressed, anxious or downright crazy people, including militant college kids, whose big daily thrill is a visit to a coffee shop, a type of brief vacation on the cheap.

In addition, Starbucks’ founder is a far-left-winger named Howard Schultz. He has preached every kind of socialist policy. He has accumulated $3 billion in his personal fortune. He even has been mentioned as a possible Democrat presidential contender.

And just For Your Information, has consumed a Starbucks coffee perhaps once or twice in the last 20 years.

Starbucks is expensive. Coffee can range anywhere from $1.75 to more than $5 for the heavily flavored ones that require extra preparation. Customers obviously pay a lot for “atmosphere” and, yes, for a better cup of coffee.

In 2017, Starbucks had revenues of $22.4 billion in its international network. As of 2015 there were 12,521 Starbucks in the United States and 23,043 worldwide, according to

Fox News reported about the new policy:

In (internet postings), people are voicing concerns that the new policy will lead to stores being filled with homeless people and drug users. One (internet poster) who claims they work at a Chicago Starbucks wrote that a homeless person using the bathroom got into a fight with a customer and police requested to see the store policy before taking action.

“This is exactly the kind of behavior that I fear will drive all the regular customers away, at least from urban locations,” … another (internet commenter) wrote in response.

On another thread debating the new policy, a Starbucks customer expressed similar concerns. “I can’t see how this will work in urban areas with large homeless/mentally ill populations… I just worry about how many employees will be put in danger (or get fired) until this happens,” the customer wrote.

Someone claiming to be an employee who works at a store in the loop in Chicago said they hate the new policy because the store bathrooms have turned into a hub for drug activity. “We haven’t been allowed to change our bathroom codes since April. So almost all the junkies and homeless people know the code now. About once a week we find needles, drug baggies, blood all over the toilet or walls,” the user wrote.

Needles? Blood all over the toilet or walls? Are you kidding?

No. This isn’t the sanitized suburbs. This is modern, hard-edged urban living. And this is going to turn out badly for Starbucks as a fixture in permissive American cities.

In other words Starbucks is going to fall prey to its own brand of political arrogance. It is yet another case of a company becoming the target of its own ideology, like universities being forced against their will to allow their workers to unionize.

With all of the publicity surrounding the racial incident the news of the updated Starbucks policy has spread like wildfire. The worst among us are now going to target Starbucks and disagreements over loitering and bathroom use could end up being parsed to the heavens. The police may end up being confused or possibly even hesitant to act when they are summoned to Starbucks.

We also can be sure that the homeless and the junkies will be totally versed in their legal rights at Starbucks and may even taunt the stores with provocative actions. You can also rest assured that lawyers will be prepared to jump into the fray at any moment, maybe even setting up “sting” operations to extract cash from wealthy Starbucks.

This is to be expected. After all most left-wing policies are intended to confound and confuse us as to what is right and what is wrong, legally or morally. Starbucks now is going to find that out the hard way.

America’s Founding Fathers believed correctly that laws should be few, relevant and easy to understand. This new Starbucks policy takes us in the opposite direction into a very grey area.

The next question is: When will Starbucks be forced to allow marijuana to be smoked in its shops? After all that could be the next target of the activists in states where marijuana is legal.

Now let us consider the decline and fall of another great institution, the Boy Scouts of America. World Net Daily reports:

The Boy Scouts have decided to accept people who identify as gay and lesbian among their ranks. And girls are welcome now, too, into the iconic organization, which has renamed itself Scouts BSA.

So what’s next?

A mandate that condoms be made available to “all participants” of its global gathering.

It’s among the demands of the World Scout Committee for any host country of a World Scout Jamboree.
That would include the 24th World Scout Jamboree, schedules July 21 – Aug. 1, 2019 in West Virginia.

… Commenting on the condom policy, John Stemberger, president of the Florida Family Policy Council, wrote that “it is not clear how far down the rabbit hole the Boy Scouts will continue to fall.”

“With the addition of condoms and alcohol, the World Jamboree is starting to sound more like a 1960s Woodstock festival rather than a campout that parents would want to send their children to!”

… The Florida Family Policy Council also pointed out that the guidelines allow the use of alcohol by adults in some locations at the jamboree.

The theme of the 2019 event is “Unlock a New World.”

Yes, a new world in which all standards of normal and decent conduct are thrown out the window.

Alcohol use by the adult supervisors? They can’t give up booze for a week for the sake of the Scouts?

This, friends, is part of the demise of the Boy Scouts and of our well-behaved American culture. It is another institution attacked, taken over and destroyed by the permissive left.
