The state of Virginia has 13 crucial electoral votes. In 2008, 2012 and 2016 those votes went to Democrats Obama and Hillary Clinton. Virginia was expected until recently by political analysts to be a sure Democrat Electoral College state in the 2020 presidential election.
But that may change with the political scandals now rocking the state. The scandals are these:
*The current white Democrat governor of Virginia Ralph Northam, elected in November 2017, said on January 30, 2019 that he supported the idea that women could decide to kill their child even after the child is born.
This caused a firestorm in the conservative media and has rightly been called “infanticide”. Shockingly Northam is also a medical doctor with a specialty in pediatrics (pertaining to children).
*Two days later a photo emerged from Northam’s 1984 medical school yearbook of two people, one in blackface and another wearing a Ku Klux Klan outfit. This photo appeared on Northam’s personal yearbook page. It has not been proven that Northam was one of the people in the photo since their faces are obscured, but the photo did appear on Northam’s page and such a page reportedly would have been approved by Northam.
*Northam’s claims about his military service are also now being questioned.
*Virginia’s Democrat lieutenant governor Justin Fairfax, who is black, is now being accused of a sexual assault in 2004. Fairfax would assume the governorship if Northam resigns over the blackface scandal.
Here is a brief history of Virginia politics:
Virginia had been a solidly Democrat state for 100 years after the Civil War. The Democrat party was the party of slavery. It dominated the South before and during the Civil War. The entire South voted almost exclusively Democrat for the century after the Civil War.
On the other hand, the Republican party was founded in 1854 as the anti-slavery party. The Democrat South hated Republicans for the next 100 years.
From 1970 to 2000 Virginia trended strongly Republican with the rise of Richard Nixon and Ronald Reagan. But starting around the year 2000 Virginia started trending Democrat again. This was largely due to two factors – large-scale immigration by liberals out of withering liberal Northeastern states like New York, Massachusetts and Vermont into conservative Virginia; and the growth of northern Virginia suburbs near Washington, DC with hundreds of thousands of highly-paid government workers who vote largely Democrat.
Nikitas3.com believes that the scandals involving Northam and possibly Fairfax could swing the state’s 13 Electoral College votes to president Trump in 2020.
And those 13 electoral votes that were expected just two weeks ago to go into the Democrat column could even decide the presidential election of 2020 if the national Electoral College vote is close. Breitbart News reports about Virginia:
The last Republican was elected governor in 2009, when Bob McDonnell, later convicted on bribery charges which were subsequently thrown out, won. Democrat Terry McAuliffe won in 2013, and Northam won in 2017.
The last Republican was elected to the United States Senate in 2002, when Sen. John Warner (R-VA) was re-elected to his final term in office.
The last time a Republican presidential candidate won the state’s electoral college vote was in 2004, when George W. Bush carried the state by a nine point margin, 54 percent to 45 percent over the Democrat candidate, John Kerry. Democrat Barack Obama won the state by six points in 2012, and four points in 2012. Democrat Hillary Clinton won the state by five points in 2016.
… “Gov. Northam’s missteps are a win-win for Republicans both in the Commonwealth and nationally,” Mike Rubino, who ran the Trump campaign effort in both the 2016 primary and 2016 general election, told Breitbart News Sunday.
The problem for Democrats is this – Northam is badly damaged primarily by the yearbook photo scandal, but also by his extremist comment defending infanticide. Most top Democrats across the nation are calling for him to resign, but only over the yearbook photo.
If Northam refuses to resign, he continues as governor and this harms the Democrat party and makes it look soft not only on racial issues but radical on abortion. But if Northam does resign it also makes Democrats look very bad.
In short, the whole scandal makes Democrats look bad.
Worse, if Northam resigns then Fairfax becomes governor. If the sexual assault scandal is then somehow proven, then that would be even worse for Democrats. And even if the sexual assault is not proven, it hangs over Fairfax. Meanwhile Fairfax is considered far too liberal for a “conservative Democrat” state like Virginia. Fairfax is extremely left-wing.
This all could have strongly beneficial effects for the Republican party in Virginia and for president Trump’s re-election.
Update: Liberals Blame Trump for Northam’s Blackface Photo… 35 Years Ago!
This is amazing. Fox News reported:
On the (NBC) Today Show, co-host Craig Melvin asked the panel why blackface seems “all of a sudden front and center in America again?”
Princeton University Professor Eddie Glaude Jr. responded by tying Northam’s scandal to the president.
“I think it has something to do with what Donald Trump has unleashed. It has something to do with the reservoir that’s underneath our politics that can always be activated at any moment,” Glaude Jr. explained. “So it’s not like it’s something new has happened. It’s always underneath. It’s the undertow.”
MSNBC political analyst Zerlina Maxwell agreed with the Princeton professor.
“You know, young children of color are dealing with kids saying, “‘Build the wall,’” Maxwell told the panel. “Donald Trump has normalized this overt display of racism.”
Liberals apparently believe in time machines!
