Do you remember when president George Bush and the oil companies were savaged in the media after a temporary gasoline price spike in the Summer of 2008? Meanwhile Obama is never fingered for permanently higher prices under his administration. So what gives?
It is simple. Obama is our first anti-petroleum president and he is a Democrat and so he escapes criticism from the Liberal Media. You will notice that there is no ongoing media narrative about truckers pushed to the economic brink by higher fuel costs, or poor people who cannot afford heating oil. Because it is happening under Obama. And then, of course, liberals claim that Obama cannot do anything about oil prices anyway, that OPEC and the oil companies control that.
Nonsense. In fact the president of the United States can strongly influence global oil prices. Because once you realize how markets work you understand that an anti-petroleum president like Obama is one of the direct causes of higher prices.
The reason that we had relatively lower and more stable gasoline prices for many decades is because American political leaders have in general been pro-petroleum and oil flowed freely. But Obama is our first anti-petroleum president. And it is important to remember that Obama does not come out and say “I want to slow or stop oil production”. He does it through his policies and always hedges his language, saying that he wants all energy options.
He does not. Obama and most Democrats ultimately are following the ecologist template; they want US oil, coal and natural gas production slowed or halted in order to de-fund the energy companies and to turn energy production and its associated wealth over to ‘green energy’ liberals.
Meanwhile Obama’s allies in the environmental movement are doing everything in their power to thwart carbon energy production in America. They are using every tactic from bans on drilling on federal lands, to “sue and settle” (a legal tactic that you can look up in your search engine) to endless ‘discoveries’ of ‘endangered species’ which are being used to stop every type of economic development on both public and private land. Yet who says that these species are ‘endangered’ in the first place?
Environmentalists themselves do. And here is how they work: THEY claim to discover a species that is ‘endangered’. THEY name it. THEY offer official “counts” of the species to show that it is “threatened”. THEY draw the maps showing where the species lives. THEY write the dire narrative. THEY offer gloomy predictions for the species’ future. THEY produce the mind-numbing studies that nobody reads and that nobody can understand anyway. THEY file the lawsuits.
So who says that any of this is true? Who is going to challenge them? There is no way to prove this stuff. THEY rig the whole game ahead of time. Then THEIR findings cannot be disproven because nobody has the time, money or inclination to finance, study and disseminate an alternative view. Meanwhile they devote their lives and careers to it. Then THEIR friends in the media and in the universities and in the government relentlessly promote and disseminate these “findings” and shout down dissenters.
And don’t think that these ecologists cannot severely curtail American oil production. It already is happening. They have thwarted oil production off many of our ocean shores and on much of our federal lands including the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge (ANWR) in Alaska.
And of course we are supposed to think that ANWR is some pristine mountain firmament of butterflies and caribou. But the ANWR drilling site is not that way at all. It is located on the treeless, flat coastal plain of northern Alaska. This place is so barren and so cold most of the year that there is hardly any wildlife there except bugs. It could have 10 billion to 20 billion barrels of oil under it. The 2,000 acre ANWR drilling site – a little over three square miles out of the 19 million acre ANWR – is just a pinprick on the map.
But the environmentalists won’t let us get it. And that is just one of the hundreds of reasons that we have high gasoline prices; because world markets and the OPEC cartel see that global oil demand is increasing and that America wants to consume more and more energy but in many cases does not want to produce it when it can be done so easily. This leads to a spike in energy prices under supply-and-demand and it gives OPEC another reason to keep crude oil prices artificially high.
It all starts with America’s anti-petroleum president. Obama is using EPA and the Interior Department and other federal agencies to limit or ban oil production through all sorts of legal maneuverings, either direct or indirect. Meanwhile environmentalists are working feverishly in the courts and in the media and in convincing liberal state legislatures to ban drilling and to stop hydraulic fracturing or “fracking”, the new super-efficient way to get oil and natural gas. ‘Endangered’ species claims are another piece of the puzzle as environmentalists devote their entire careers to this obstruction as part of a relentless drive by people on the political left to decimate our traditional energy supplies.
Fortunately not everyone is listening to Obama or to the enviro elites. American oil and natural gas production is surging in many areas because of factors that the environmentalists cannot stop like “fracking” in friendly states.
Now consider Prudhoe Bay, the massive oil deposit in northern Alaska. When it was first discovered in the 1960s it was estimated to have 1 billion barrels of oil. The 800-mile north-south above-ground Trans-Alaska Pipeline was built to get that oil to market. It started pumping in 1977. By the 1990s the estimate was that Prudhoe had 9 billion barrels. Yet by the time it is pumped out in 2015 this one single deposit will have produced 18 billion barrels of oil. Meanwhile this one pipeline has at times over the last 36 years carried more than 2% of the world’s total daily oil demand, while environmentalists claimed that the oil from Prudhoe would only last a few months.
Environmentalists did not want Prudhoe tapped. They fought the pipeline. And then they put wording in the original pipeline legislation that the pipeline would be torn down after Prudhoe ran out. Even now, however, the pipeline is slowly degrading because it is not being run at full capacity any longer and this causes it to erode for a variety of physical reasons. Environmentalists favor this slow erosion. That is why they want no new supplies going into the pipeline, so that it wears out naturally.
But the oil from nearby ANWR would need to go through the same pipeline. So environmentalists want to let the pipeline degrade or be torn down before ANWR is tapped so that they can say that there is no way to get the ANWR oil to market and so we cannot tap ANWR.
See how devious they are? And see how wasteful they are? They want to destroy a perfectly good structure in the name of radical ecology. But in fact their strategy is very much anti-environment – to destroy something useful that required so much in energy, time, capital, labor and resources to build in the first place.
That is why we must keep the pipeline open and get ANWR oil flowing as soon as possible. Because tearing down the Alaska pipeline would be another incremental blow to the world energy supply and would be another step toward permanently higher global energy prices. Meanwhile there are other big oil and gas deposits all over northern Alaska, both onshore and offshore.
Don’t expect Obama to help. He has waffled on the underground Keystone oil pipeline just to appear fair-minded, like he is seriously thinking about it. But he is really just delaying it over and over in hopes of finally killing it by default, but in a way that he will take no blame.
In fact pipelines are the safest and most efficient ways to transport oil. There are several million miles of underground oil pipelines in the US. But now the environmentalists are opposed to pipelines, which is their big new crusade. Because stopping pipelines is another way to stop oil production indirectly by halting the means of getting the oil to markets.
Obama and most Democrats and their cronies in the enviro movement are going all out to halt oil, gas and coal production in the United States, but it is not being reported that way. It is a huge task but incrementally they are trying to do it under the rubric of “global warming”. That is why they made up “global warming” in the first place, which we know is not happening. We all see record cold temperatures all over the globe every season as the ecologists claim that the earth is heating up in unprecedented fashion.
We must get back to producing our abundant carbon energy like oil, coal and natural gas so that Americans can live their everyday lives in peace and prosperity. We also need a new generation of hundreds of nuclear reactors to insure a safe, reliable electricity supply for the next century.
