‘Affluenza’ – Another Media Distortion

There is a new type of attack on wealthy Americans by the Liberal Media. It is called ‘affluenza’ which is supposed to mean that affluence causes people to be bad, particularly the children of wealthy individuals. This, of course, is meant to say that capitalism itself is bad and, of course, by association, that “rich Republicans” must be evil.

Friends, nothing could be more deceptive than this narrative is. It is the opposite of the truth. Let us look at the facts.

First, more and more of the rich people in America today are Democrats. In many cities there are few “rich Republicans” in sight. The three richest men in America – Bill Gates, Warren Buffet and Larry Ellison – all support Obama. The richest self-made woman in America, Oprah Winfey, supports Obama.

Second, the most ill-behaved family in American history is the very wealthy and very liberal Kennedy family. In no other family do we have a role model for such a clear, chronic and repetitive history of family-wide bad behavior, drugs, alcoholism, betrayal, adultery, lying and lawlessness. Who could forget Ted Kennedy allowing Mary Jo Kopechne to drown in 1969 and then actually trying to cover it up. President John F. Kennedy, whose father stole the 1960 presidential election for his son, even had been found to be having a sexual affair with a communist spy named Ellen Rometsch at the height of the Cold War in 1962. He did this because he felt he was entitled, as all the Kennedys have felt entitled. Our whole nation certainly was compromised by this Kennedy arrogance.

How about the wife of Robert F. Kennedy Jr. who committed suicide in 2012, leaving behind four children? Could RFK Jr. have contributed to that through abuse?

Of course. RFK Jr. is a notorious philanderer and engages in typical Kennedy behavior caused by ‘affluenza’ – the Kennedys’ sense of entitlement due to their wealth.

How about all of the alcoholism, drug abuse, suspicious death and other tragedy in the Kennedy family?

Yes, indeed, there is such a thing as ‘affluenza’. It is rampant among liberals. Now compare the Kennedys to the Bushes. Do you see this terrible behavior in the “rich Republican” Bush family?

No. The Bushes are decent and well behaved – no suicides or mysterious deaths or drug overdoses or divorces or even murder charges like the one against Kennedy cousin Michael Skakel. George W. Bush even overcame youthful alcoholism while the Kennedys drag out their drinking over a lifetime.

And guess what? The Bushes have a net worth of about 6% of the Kennedys, putting the lie to the myth that the Bushes are so “rich”. The Kennedys are reported to be worth up to $1 billion while the Bushes are worth about $60 million.

See how the Liberal Media even lie about who is “rich”?

Look at Mitt Romney who is worth $270 million or less than one-half of 1% of Obama lovers Buffet and Gates. Romney’s family is one of the best behaved in America – no drinking, drugs, affairs, corruption, bad language etc. Romney is a totally honest man and a gentleman.

Then look at all the rich, decadent crazies in ultra-liberal Hollywood. There you see the most spoiled, incorrigible young people in the world (Lindsey Lohan, Miley Cyrus etc., etc.). One of Romney’s biggest internet critics is the entertainer Cher whose daughter changed her sex to a man. Gee, could Cher’s $330 million fortune – more than Romney! – have contributed to her daughter’s unhappiness with herself?

Of course, because the mother is a rich lunatic. ‘Affluenza’ clearly played a role. This kid had way too much time on her hands, and a wacky mother to boot. She should have been happy but she was not. As a woman she was somewhat attractive. As a “man” she looks like Ralph Kramden of The Honeymooners.

How about Obama himself? When he was being raised by his prosperous grandmother who was a bank vice president in Honolulu and was attending one of the most elite prep schools in America he “spent the last two years of high school in a (cocaine and marijuana induced) daze”, according to his own words.

Gee, that sounds like the entitled elites losing all control, does it not? Those darned rich kids at those prep schools! They are horrible, aren’t they! Decadent and reckless! Sounds like ‘affluenza’! And I thought they were all Republicans!

Cnn.com recent published a front-page article about ‘affluenza’ that said this:

(CNN) — Attorneys for Texas teen Ethan Couch claimed that his “affluenza” meant he was blameless for driving drunk and causing a crash that left four people dead in June.

Simply put, Couch, 16, claims that his condition stemmed from having wealthy, privileged parents who never set limits for him.

Judge Jean Boyd sentenced him Tuesday to 10 years of probation but no jail time, saying she would work to find him a long-term treatment facility.

But Eric Boyles, who lost his wife and daughter in the crash, said on CNN’s “Anderson Cooper 360,” “There are absolutely no consequences for what occurred that day. The primary message has to absolutely be that money and privilege can’t buy justice in this country.”

Is “affluenza” real? Or is it a way for coddled children and adolescents to evade consequences for their actions?

Not surprisingly, “affluenza” does not appear in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, or DSM, the “psychiatric Bible.”

But the term highlights the issue of parents, particularly upper-middle-class ones, who not only refuse to discipline their children but may protest the efforts of others — school officials, law enforcement and the courts — who attempt to do so, said Suniya Luthar, a professor of psychology at Arizona State University.

“There are families where very, very few limits are set at a time when they should be,” she said. By age 16, she noted, it’s too late: “The horse is out of the barn.” (end of cnn.com excerpt)

Yes, like the Kennedys. You should see the rich Democrats in my town in Massachusetts. One was suspected of killing his father and another family has been involved in drugs, arson, tax evasion and every other type of crime. Another was run out of town for sex crimes. Cnn.com continued:

Luthar says she has studied wealthier families, however, and “we’ve found the level of serious adjustment problems ranging from depression, anxiety, delinquency, substance abuse higher among kids of upper-middle-class families.”

She says in one of her studies, her team gave youths several different scenarios, ranging from minor to serious infractions — such as being caught for the third time with vodka at school or plagiarizing on a test — and asked them how likely their parents would be to protest any punishment for them.

“There was definitely a subgroup of kids that said, ‘My parents would object (to punishment from school officials),’ ” she said.

However, she points out that this is not the norm. “It’s a small group (of parents) but very vocal, aggressive, entitled. … There is definitely a small subgroup that is powerful and way off the charts.”

“I wouldn’t say there’s worse parenting in affluent families and fewer limits set,” Gresham said. “That’s not true.”

But in wealthy families, Gresham said, “kids without limits have a lot more resources to use for their impulsive behavior. They have a lot more money and a lot more access to powerful cars that are fast; to drugs and alcohol, because those things cost money. So the extra resources that you have to live out your impulse control problems really create a problem.” (end of cnn.com excerpt)

Yes, like the fast car that Follywood actor Paul Walker was driving when he was killed. Drugs? Yup, the drugs that the liberal left has been promoting since the 1960s as harmless fun.

So what do we conservatives say about drunk driving and drugs and other illegalities and bad behaviors?

We say don’t do it, and that punishment should be strong because otherwise the miscreants will never learn. But who says over and over and over that we must be lenient on bad and even criminal behavior?

Liberals do. There even is a story about a teacher union in Ohio that is seeking a $10,000 taxpayer-funded severance payment for a homosexual public school teacher who is in jail for raping his student repeatedly over several years.

Why do liberals favor leniency?

Because their own children are so often badly behaved and because they themselves are often so badly behaved. Who could forget Ted Kennedy, 22 years after the Kopechne drowning, drinking and partying in 1991 at a Florida bar with his nephew in the famous William Kennedy Smith rape case?

Now look at what else cnn.com reported:

Gresham says she understands why Couch’s sentencing left some outraged but agrees with the judge that he should be in treatment. (end of cnn.com excerpt)

Yes, “treatment” is the liberal approach to everything that endlessly coddles bad behavior. That will fix everything, right? As the “therapist” asks you to please, please, please tell us everything that is wrong with the world so that we then will understand your problems!

Wrong. Coddling encourages bad behavior, like liberals coddling the welfare state with endless handouts, creating more poverty and dependency. Indeed liberals are the worst coddlers of all. And the worst behaved people in America.

So is ‘affluenza’ real?

Yes, Democrats suffer from it every day.
